Gravity (The Taking #1) by Melissa West Release
Date: 12/18/12
Entangled Teen 284 pages
Summary from Goodreads:
In the future, only one rule will matter:
Don’t.
Ever.
Peek.
Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed — arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.
Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She’s a military legacy who’s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know — especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

Gravity was a fantastically unique love story. From the very beginning I was caught up in the whole new world that West has created. I rarely pick up anything in the sci-fi genre, but I'm glad I grabbed this one.
In the book, Ari's Earth helps the Ancient's, an alien race, by allowing them to come and take antibodies and things that human bodies produce and the alien bodies need in order to survive on Earth. Humans are to cooperate with one rule. Don't. Ever. Peek.
Ari doesn't mean to break the rules, but suddenly she cannot find her Taking Patch, a blindfold that covers her eyes and paralyzes her body while the Taking is happening. Ari lies completely still as she listens to the Ancient enter her room. She feels as the Ancient leaves the ground and hovers over her, but when she feels a drop of moisture on her face, she breaks the rule. She peeks. The last thing she expects to see is the familiar face of Jackson Locke, a boy from her school.
Jackson has to work hard at it, but eventually he convinces Ari that the humans are not fulfilling their part of the agreement with the Ancients. He pleads for her help even though it will mean going against her her father and all she has ever known to be true.
As Ari and Jackson work to save both of their worlds, Ari finds herself falling for this boy, even though it was obvious to her that he was keeping secrets.
This was such a fun and fast-paced book. The author's writing grabbed me from the first page. It was very hard to put this book down long enough to take care of my family. I was extremely impressed with this first installment of this series. It makes me excited to grab the rest of them and inhale them as quickly as I did this one.
Walk the Moon - Tightrope
In my bed, I'm rolling over
I'm changing, I've been the change, on the swings on the set, on the night that we met
And all the beads of water move up the glass
You speak your mind, you cannot take it back
Walk a tightrope, walk a little tightrope!
