2014 REAL BOOK CHALLENGE

I have a sad story to tell.  Do you see this book shelf?  This is in my living room.  The sad part of this story is that I have NOT read more than half of these books on this shelf.

Any why?  Because I read  on my phone or iPad and therefore I have forgotten what it feels like to turn actual pages and run my hands over an actual spine of a book.  In a world of Kindles, Nooks, and multiple other e-readers, these works of art often get forgotten.  The lovely ladies at the Fic Fare Blog have set up a 2014 Real Book Challenge to combat this very thing.

Challenge Guidelines:

  • *This challenge will run from Jan 1, 2014 - Dec 31, 2014.
  • *The challenge is open to anyone! You don't have to be a blogger, as long as you have a place to post about the challenge. (Your blog, Amazon, Goodreads, Twitter, Facebook, youtube, tumblr, etc.)
  • *Any book counts. It can be any genre, any length, and as old or new as you want. If you can hold it in your hand and turn the pages yourself, it belongs here. (This includes Advanced Reader Copies.)
  • *Feel free to list your books in your first post or wait until the end of the year and write them in a wrap-up post. Even if you list them, you can always make changes later.
  • *Sign-ups will be open until Dec 1, 2014, so feel free to join at any time throughout the year.

You can join at any level.

Levels:

21-30 - Real Book Snob

A Review of ALIENATED by Melissa Landers

(Goodreads Blurb)
Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.
Thank you to Disney Hyperion and to Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The Story...

Cara is still in shock after being informed that she is one of three humans to be included in the foreign exchange program with the L'eihrs, aliens who happen to share the same DNA make-up as humans.  But first her family must survive hosting Aelyx, the alien boy who will be visiting Earth for 8 months.  Even with the full scholarship to the college of her choice and the inside information to launch her writing career, Cara still isn't sure if it will be worth the headache.

Cara's first impression of Aelyx is that he is beautiful but empty.  He may be good looking, but his cold, dead eyes seem specifically designed to turn her away.

While most humans are excited to have a visit from the more advanced L'eihrs, paranoia and ignorance cause a few extremists to begin making trouble.  Cara and Aelyx begin to grow closer as the rest of the school literally turns their backs on them.  Cara makes excuses for Aelyx's secret trips into the woods and the way he seems to keep some things hidden from her.  When Cara's best friend and ex-boyfriend get caught up with the extremist group HALO, Cara has to make a decision.  Can she rely on years of friendship or will she trust Aelyx and the new relationship that she has begun with him?

What Worked...

I loved so much about this story.  The action picked up right away, and I read this within the span of 24 hours.  The aliens were wonderful and I love how the author described their world and their tools.

Aelyx and Cara both started out very wary of each other.  They both felt attraction to the other, but they held back until they learned more about each other.  Their friendship was sweet and grew into something real and strong.

The tension created by HALO, the neighbors, and friends kept things interesting.  This book was a lot of fun and I am very excited to read more of Aelyx and Cara's story.

Even though this story is science fiction, it will definitely appeal to fans of Young Adult Romance.  It was an excellent debut.

What Didn't...

I know we don't know the whole story yet, but it just seemed to me that the L'eihrs forgave the humans too easily.  I think Cara may see some resentment from this once she reaches L'eihr.

One Day Too Late - A Review of GOLDEN by Jessi Kirby

 (Goodreads Blurb)
Love, tragedy, and mystery converge in this compelling novel from “an author to watch” (Booklist).

Seventeen-year-old Parker Frost has never taken the road less traveled. Valedictorian and quintessential good girl, she’s about to graduate high school without ever having kissed her crush or broken the rules. So when fate drops a clue in her lap—one that might be the key to unraveling a town mystery—she decides to take a chance.

Julianna Farnetti and Shane Cruz are remembered as the golden couple of Summit Lakes High—perfect in every way, meant to be together forever. But Julianna’s journal tells a different story—one of doubts about Shane and a forbidden romance with an older, artistic guy. These are the secrets that were swept away with her the night that Shane’s jeep plunged into an icy river, leaving behind a grieving town and no bodies to bury.

Reading Julianna’s journal gives Parker the courage to start to really live—and it also gives her reasons to question what really happened the night of the accident. Armed with clues from the past, Parker enlists the help of her best friend, Kat, and Trevor, her longtime crush, to track down some leads. The mystery ends up taking Parker places that she never could have imagined. And she soon finds that taking the road less traveled makes all the difference.
The Story...

Golden is a beautiful story about a girl who learns to live for herself instead of following the plans that others have for her life.  Parker Frost has lived her life with one goal in mind; get into a good college and become a doctor.  Every choice she makes, every class she takes has been to get her closer to that goal.  Her future goals even control her choice to laugh off the attention of Trevor Collins, Parker's cute friend who is always flirting with her. It is now her senior year and her best friend, Kat, is pushing her to try something, ANYTHING, new.

Parker discovers the senior journal of Juliana, a girl who disappeared ten years ago along with her boyfriend, Cruz.  During a large storm, Cruz's jeep went off the road and was found empty and upturned in a ditch.  The bodies of the two teenagers were never found.  Now Parker is up for a scholarship provided by the families of the lost teens.

Parker sees this journal as an opportunity to get a glimpse into the life of someone who has become a local legend.  As she reads Juliana's journal, Parker learns that the decisions that we make everyday can make a HUGE impact in other people's lives down the road.  With the help of Kat and Trevor, Parker discovers that things aren't always what they seem and she finds that the maybe Juliana and Cruz's accident didn't happen the way everyone had always assumed.

What Worked...

I loved the way the author was able to tell two separate love stories with continuity and to have them both make sense.  It was great to watch Parker learn from the choices that someone else had made.  It was great to see someone who was able to grow from the mistakes of others.  Also, I like that Parker was able to see that her mother was controlling her life because she was unhappy with her own choices.

Parker and Trevor didn't have an epic love, but the patience and effort that Trevor showed was sweet and brought a significant level of swoon.  Parker struggled with what to do about Trevor and eventually followed her heart and not her head.  She finally decided that life was too short to let another opportunity pass her by.

What Didn't...

I was disappointed that we didn't get to learn more about Juliana and 'Orion's' love story, but I did appreciate the author's decision to leave some things to our imagination.

5 out of 5 stars.

About this Molly McAdams:
Molly grew up in California but now lives in the oh-so-amazing state of Texas with her husband and furry four-legged daughter. Some of her hobbies include hiking, snowboarding, traveling and long walks on the beach…which roughly translates to being a homebody with her hubby and dishing out movie quotes. When she’s not diving into the world of her characters, she can be found hiding out in her bedroom surrounded by her laptop, cell, Kindle and fighting over the TV remote. She has a weakness for crude-humored movies, fried pickles and loves curling up in a fluffy comforter during a thunderstorm...or under one in a bathtub if there are tornados. That way she can pretend they aren't really happening.
