Living Room - Stephanie's Review of WE'LL NEVER BE APART by Emiko Jean

Title: We'll Never Be Apart
Author: Emiko Jean
Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: 10/6/2015

Murder.

Fire.

Revenge.

That’s all seventeen-year-old Alice Monroe thinks about. Committed to a mental ward at Savage Isle, Alice is haunted by memories of the fire that killed her boyfriend, Jason. A blaze her twin sister Cellie set. But when Chase, a mysterious, charismatic patient, agrees to help her seek vengeance, Alice begins to rethink everything. Writing out the story of her troubled past in a journal, she must confront hidden truths.

Is the one person she trusts only telling her half the story? Nothing is as it seems in this edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller from the debut author Emiko Jean.

Hi, I’m Emiko.
When I am not writing, I am reading. Most of my friends are imaginary. Before I became a writer I was an entomologist, a candle maker, a florist and most recently a teacher. I live in Washington (with my husband and very large dog) and love the rain.
My debut novel, WE’LL NEVER BE APART, was inspired by my work with children in foster care, and will be published by HMH Books for Young Readers Oct 6, 2015. I am represented by Erin Harris at Folio Literary Management.

Alice Monroe is in a mental ward called Savage Isle. Besides being sedated every day and forced to attend group therapy, all she wants is revenge on her twin sister Cellie, for setting fire to a barn that killed Alice’s boyfriend, Jason. In the Psych ward, Alice is determined to get to the highly restricted area so she can finally kill her sister, who’s been tormenting her since they were little. When she meets the mysterious boy named Chase, he promises to help her do just that. Until one night she realizes that Cellie might just be trying to do the same thing to her.
Told in chapters occurring in the present, alternating with Alice’s fascinating journal entries detailing events from their childhood- from how the girl’s spent a week in a house alone with their dead grandfather at six years old, to the grim foster situations they’d been placed in.
Emiko Jean’s writing is beautifully poetic, heartbreaking, and sinister all at once. There is a very cool twist toward the end, which I did not figure out until it actually happens, and the author does a great job of keeping the reader in suspense for the entirety of the book. I also love the way the twist was handled- realistically, and with sensitivity.
My favorite parts were Alice’s journal entries. You get a peek at two little girls, one very damaged and on the border of deranged, and the other just trying to hold on to some sense of normalcy as they grow into teens. I loved this book and could not put it down. This is a little creepy, a little crazy and a lot awesome. Perfect for this time of year.
5 stars.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this novel.

Excerpt

“Keep the engine running,” I say. “If I’m not out in five minutes, leave.”

Poe nods her head, but doesn’t argue.

When the nine o’clock hour comes, both she and I watch the clock on the dashboard turn to one minute after.

“You’ll need to keep your mask on, Poesy. Make sure none of your hair is showing,” I say. “Keep your head down the entire time.”

“Okay,” she answers in a small voice.

“If you see cops—”

“I know what to do, Lowen. I know you want me to leave you.” She sighs. “But I don’t know if I can.”

Despite our circumstances, I smirk. “Hopefully you won’t have to.”

At nine thirty, Poe and I switch seats, and she gets behind the wheel while I load the pistol. With hands that shake uncontrollably, I place the ski mask over my head but don’t pull it down my face. I help Poesy with hers, tucking in every stray strand of hair so they remain unseen.

She grabs my wrist, and our eyes meet. I see fear combined with love and loyalty in her stare.

I kiss her knuckles and promise with the chance of lying, “We’re going to be okay.”

Unlike when we drove into the garage, the streets are alive and filled with a variety of automobiles, and dirty sidewalks carry several pedestrians. The forty-second drive to the bank feels like forty years. Thick blood courses through my veins, and I feel it flow through arteries and vessels, nourishing muscle and bone. My head echoes with the thump, thump, thump of my hard heartbeat. Every breath is shallower than the one before it.

“Pull down your mask,” I say, but my voice sounds foreign and feels a million miles away.

As Poe drives into California Credit Union’s parking lot, I grip the cold steel in my hand.

The edges of my vision blur; I’m blinded by adrenaline.

My skin crawls like I’m covered in spiders; I’m delirious with edginess.

“Your ski mask,” Poesy shrieks. “Cover your fucking face, Lowen.”

My girl reaches over and pulls it down for me. The car stops to a screeching halt, and reality crashes into me in a brutal rush, stripping me of air and voice.

“If we’re in this, you need to go,” Poesy says in a calm but stern tone, hidden behind her black mask.

There’s peace in her eyes.

There’s strength in the girl who stayed with me when I was locked up.

The one who’s remained by my side, believing and starving all at the same time.

With the gun in my hand and determination in my heart, I leave Poesy in the car and push open the glass double doors into the bank.

As I step foot onto the burgundy carpet, I yell, “Everyone down on the fucking floor!”

Catch Me - Lori's Review of ACT LIKE IT by Lucy Parker

Title: Act Like It
Author: Lucy Parker
Publisher: Carina Press
Publication Date: 11/30/2015

ActLikeItWeb (1)

About Act Like It:
This just in: romance takes center stage as West End theatre's Richard Troy steps out with none other than castmate Elaine Graham.

Richard Troy used to be the hottest actor in London, but the only thing firing up lately is his temper. We all love to love a bad boy, but Richard's antics have made him Enemy Number One, breaking the hearts of fans across the city.

Have the tides turned? Has English rose Lainie Graham made him into a new man?

Sources say the mismatched pair has been spotted at multiple events, arm in arm and hip to hip. From fits of jealousy to longing looks and heated whispers, onlookers are stunned by this blooming romance.

Could the rumors be right? Could this unlikely romance be the real thing? Or are these gifted stage actors playing us all?

Lucy Parker lives in the gorgeous Central Otago region of New Zealand, where she feels lucky every day to look out at mountains, lakes, and vineyards. She has a degree in Art History, loves museums and art galleries, and doodles unrecognizable flowers when she has writer’s block.

When she’s not writing, working or sleeping, she happily tackles the towering pile of to-be-read books that never gets any smaller. Thankfully, there’s always another story waiting.

Her interest in romantic fiction began with a pre-teen viewing of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (Firth-style), which prompted her to read the book as well. A family friend introduced her to Georgette Heyer, and the rest was history.

Lucy Parker is a new author to me and I'm extremely glad that I took a chance on her. At first glance ACT LIKE IT is not a unique story, but the writing was captivating and had me flipping through the pages as fast as my fat sausage fingers could handle it.

Lainie and Richard are actors in London. Lainie is sort of the sweetheart of the theater world and Richard is notorious for throwing fits as well as dishes, insults, and any number of other disastrous things. In a desperate attempt to save Richard's nightmare of a reputation and therefore the play that both he and Lainie are currently in, Lainie agrees to be seen in public and act like Richard's new love interest.

Richard is a gorgeous man, but is not very well liked among his fellow actors or the press. He is arrogant and seems to look down his privileged nose at everyone around him.

Lainie is struggling to recover her public image after her ex VERY publicly broke up with her in the tabloids, from the bed of another woman. With everyone believing that she has jumped from on actor's bed to another, Lainie is finding it hard to cozy up to Richard in front of the cameras. Instead she finds it easier and much more enjoyable to irritate him as often as possible.

Since Richard was born wealthy, he is used to people kissing up to him. He never expects to have the sweetheart of the stage standing up to him, and he certainly never guessed how much he would like it when she does.

This story covered all the bases for me. There was tension, romance, and redemption. Richard and Lainie didn't care much for each other when they first begin their 'relationship', but their admiration for each other grows as they begin to spend time together, first as assignments from their management and then later, voluntarily.

Richard is cranky, but has many sweet and swoon-worthy moments. He isn't easy to love, which made me like his character even more.

Lainie is strong and doesn't try to hide from what she is feeling with Richard, but most of all, I love that she is flawed. She says things in anger, she sometimes acts with poor judgement, and is just so completely real.

I love when I get little surprises like this one that come from nowhere and leave me thinking about them long after I'm through reading the book. If you like romance of any kind, I recommend you give this one a try. It is a smart, captivating, grown-up romance that is loads of fun.

Liliana Hart & Friends - MacKenzie Family Project

1,001 Dark Nights is

proud to present…

The Liliana Hart & Friends -

 MacKenzie Family Project!

A Message from Liliana Hart:

Dear Readers,
I’m thrilled to be able to introduce the MacKenzie Family World to you. I asked five of my favorite authors to create their own characters and put them into the world you all know and love. These amazing authors revisited Surrender, Montana, and through their imagination you’ll get to meet new characters, while reuniting with some of your favorites.
These stories are hot, hot, hot—exactly what you’d expect from a MacKenzie story—and it was pure pleasure for me to read each and every one of them and see my world through someone else’s eyes. They definitely did the series justice, and I hope you discover five new authors to put on your auto-buy list.
Make sure you check out Troublemaker, a brand new, full-length MacKenzie novel written by me. And yes, you’ll get to see more glimpses of Shane before his book comes out next year.
So grab a glass of wine, pour a bubble bath, and prepare to Surrender.
Love Always,
Liliana Hart
