Prayers For Rain - A Review of TEN TINY BREATHS by K.A. Tucker

(Goodreads Blub)
Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.

Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.

But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.
Thank you to Netgalley  for providing an e-book copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The Story...

Kacey Cleary and her younger sister Livie are on the run after escaping their guardian uncle's inappropriate advances.  The sisters find shelter in Miami, Florida.  Now if only Kacey could escape the ghosts that have haunted her since the night that changed her life.

Four years ago, Kacey lost both of her parents, her best friend, and her boyfriend  in a horrible car accident where Kacey was the only survivor.  Years of physical therapy and kickboxing have strengthened her body, but not her mind.  Kacey has held herself back from everyone.  Even a simple handshake has the power to bring Kacey to her knees, literally.

A new city, a new job, and a new apartment mean new neighbors and new friends.  It also means more anxiety for Kacey.  Livie wants her to try to open herself up to their new neighbors.

Kacey makes room in her life for their neighbor, Storm, and her daughter, Mia, not realizing that she also left the door open for Trent, the sexy neighbor who is occupying too much time in Kacey's thoughts.

Trent is patient and helpful.  He gently pokes and prods Kacey's carefully constructed walls until they crumble around her ankles leaving her feeling alive for the first time in four years, possibly the first time in her whole life.

Livie sees the struggles that Kacey always believed she kept hidden. She fights hard to balance "trying" as Livie has asked while protecting what's left of her heart.

As Kacey spends time with Trent, it becomes obvious that Trent has an unfortunate past of his own.  During the whole book you keep wondering, will Kacey's lack of trust or the secrets Trent keeps buried be the thing that eventually destroys them both.

What Worked...

Oh boy. I'm gonna try not to spoil things.  For me, as powerful as this story is, it could have very easily gone wrong if it weren't for the characters.  The author created characters that we get to know very well.  Because we know them so well, we can understand why they act the way they do.  We come to love Trent so much that in the end, when we find out his secret, we are ready to forgive him and begging for Kacey to do the same.  He is so much a part of us by the end that we will forgive him almost anything.

The same goes with Kacey.  We know her so well that we understand exactly how much Trent's actions hurt her.  While I was cheering Trent on out of one side of my mouth, I was yelling, "Run, Kacey, run!" from the other side.  As it turns out Trent's betrayal was exactly what Kacey needed in order to heal.

The supporting cast were all amazing.  They created the right feel and the right amount of tension.  They were perfect in their respective roles

What Didn't...

I cannot think of anything that didn't work.  It all seemed to flow perfectly.  I loved it and cannot wait to get started reading One Tiny Lie (Ten Tiny Breaths #2).

Prayers For Rain by The Cure

I chose this song because of the overall feel as well as the lyrics.  It all seems to portray Kacey's state of mind.

Teaser - FURY by Fisher Amelie

I was amazed by VAIN and GREED blew me away.  And now, in the wake of this teaser, I am absolutely beside myself with wanting more.  While this isn't the cover of the next book in the Seven Deadly series, it is very nice to look at.  Without further flailing, may I present this teaser for FURY.

FURY 2014

           Breathe.

            Breathe.

            Breathe.

My chest burned with such intensity, I could barely stomach it.
I glanced behind me. He was close. My eyes searched my surroundings. Pitch black and seemingly nowhere else to go. I caught sight of a small alley to my left about half a block ahead. I ducked within it and noticed piles of trash amassed against the edge of the buildings. The smell was atrocious, burning my nose.
I threw her onto the ground and tossed what I could over her.
“Don’t move,” I told her. “Don’t say a word. Don’t breathe.” I peered furiously over my shoulder. “And for the love of God, whatever you do, cover your ears and don’t look.”
Her eyes widened to impossible breadth and she nodded. She obeyed me and faced the wall. I covered her face as best I could and waited.

Breathe.

Breathe.

Breathe.

My chest rose and fell violently. The rapid, thump, thump, thump of my heart drummed frantically in my ears. Strapped to my sides rested two sharp blades I’d brought from home, the ones I’d always hunted with. I carefully unzipped my hoodie, crossed my arms and palmed the knives’ handles.

Breathe.

Breathe.

Breathe.

“Đến đây!” I heard, making my pulse jump. My heart leapt into my throat. I crouched slightly, bent my knees, readying for anything.
The speaker, the man chasing us, rushed around the edge of the building but came to a stop when he caught me standing. He smiled cruelly then spoke to me in Vietnamese, words I didn’t understand and steadily made his way toward me. He stopped short once more. His head tilted to his right slightly. His eyes narrowed.
“You messed up,” he said in English, realizing I didn’t understand him and made his way toward me once more.
I shook my head, my tongue too thick to speak.
He was big for a local. I suppose that’s why they hired him to do what he did but no matter. I was taller and built better. I also had something he didn’t. I was trained to kill. Animals, yes, but to me he was just that. An animal.
My blood boiled in my veins and the anxious adrenaline was replaced with an absolute hatred, a fury so destructive it frightened me. My teeth gritted in my jaw and I reveled in the pressure.
I knew it the instant he’d made the decision, and all the breath I held whooshed from my lungs. A look of determination flitted across his face and I could only smile, content in my malice. This visibly confused him but he charged forward regardless.
Two feet within striking distance, my short blades pealed with a beautiful ring and it brought me such serenity. The gun strapped to his back was useless now and he knew it.
I plunged both blades into his ribs and his mouth opened in shock, his body leaning against mine in support. I held him up with the blades and bent into his ear.
“You messed up,” I said, stealing his words.
Blood curdled from his mouth and I removed my blades as he slid to the ground. I bent and wiped my knives off on his jacket. His mouth opened and shut like a fish out of water but I couldn’t conjure up any compassion for him. Instead, I stood over him and placed my boot over his heaving chest, pressing as much of my weight into him as possible.
“You will burn in fire so scorching you’ll beg for this moment over and over again.”
His last breath struggled from his lungs and his eyes went blank. I replaced my knives and kicked the corpse to the side, covering his body as much as I could with garbage. Hoping the smell would hide him and no one would find him for several days.
I turned back to her, fished her from her hiding place and threw her over my shoulder. “Don’t look,” I ordered and she nodded her head

Cover Reveal - SEEKING HER (A Finding It Novella) by Cora Carmack

Even though this cover is different from
the others of Cora Carmack's books,
it's simply stunning.

ABOUT SEEKING HER by Cora Carmack

A few months after being honorable discharged from the military, Jackson Hunt is still struggling to adjust back to the real world.  He needs to get a job and find a sense of normalcy if he's going to keep his own demons at bay.  The job that falls into his lap, though, is anything but normal.

Bodyguard (and baby-sitter) to spoiled-rich-girl Kelsey Summers isn’t exactly what he’d been looking for, but it’s a chance to travel, to get away from the home that has felt stifling ever since his return. It would be a pretty sweet gig if it weren’t for the fact that Kelsey’s father doesn’t want Kelsey to know she’s being followed. Hunt feels guilty (and a little bit creepy) as he watches her from afar. She’s vibrant and infuriating, exciting and reckless, mysterious and familiar. When he sees her falling into the same patterns that he suffered years ago, he decides it’s time to stop watching and help her instead. But getting to know her is more difficult than he thought, especially because the more he knows her,the more he wants her.

Over 30 Amazon Kindle Freebies 11/16/2013

I love free things.  Sometime people get scared of free books thinking that is they are free then they must not be very good.  While sometimes this is true, I have found that it is not always the case.  I often find great stories for free.  Stories I would never have read if they weren't free simply because I don't know the author.  So give these a look.  Your next favorite book may be hiding in here somewhere.

Please note that these books are free at the time of posting.
