A Peek at the Week

Of course I had to pick up the hardcover of Kasie West's newest book. I was a little hesitant because I thought it was the star falls in love with the small town girl thing, but I should know by now to trust Kasie. It's the girl that's the 'star' and he's anything but a small town boy. And as always Kasie West delivers the cuteness.

I'm also currently reading the e-book of Not So Nice Guy by R.S. Grey, a fun friends-to-lovers story that was recommended to me. I'm enjoying it immensely.

I'm deeply into The Renegades by Marissa Meyer. Rebecca Soler and Dan Bittner are absolutely perfect narrators for this story.

Even though The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros is just now coming out, it was still 2018 when I read it and it was honestly the best book I read all year. This book was written from the standpoint of someone who knows, who has been there and it shows.

At first glance, this appears to be a story about a single mom who loses her last bit of family to war and the buddy who was asked to watch over her small family. The more I read, the more I realized that this was more Beckett's journey than Ella's, especially the last half of the book.

I am going to attempt to tread carefully here because I do not want to spoil anything, however, you will definitely want to have your tissues near you as you read. I am not a crier, but I had ugly tears at one point of this book. I was at work and was pretty inconsolable for a short while. Because it is sad, yes, but also because it is just so stunning and beautiful.

Ella's journey is filled with rocky uphill battles but she demonstrates the strength of the human spirit. Ella and her children, Colt and Maisie, are such incredible human beings. This whole book is packed with their resilience and indomitable joy in the face of overwhelming adversity. The reason I say that this is more Beckett's book than Ella's is because he is there to witness and learn from this small family. 

After all the horrors of war and losing his best friends, Beckett really has little drive to do much more than fulfill his friend's last request. It is through watching Ella and her children spread joy and continue to pursue their dreams despite roadblocks, that Beckett begins to come alive. He realizes that life does go on and that he can have a hand in how it is experienced. He begins to see that he can have joy in his own life, even after the his incredible loss.

I do not approve of the way that Beckett hides some truths from Ella. I do appreciate that it needed to be done, but I just had to say it.

I loved this book from beginning to end and I'll recommend it until my dying day. This book is life-changing and I'm a better person for having read it. Thank you, Rebecca for sharing this amazing gift with us.

Devil's Daughter features Sebastian and Evangeline's daughter, Phoebe, Lady Clare, who is now a widow with two young sons to raise. After a brief but meaningful meet-cute, Phoebe finally realizes that this man with the smoldering looks is actually West Ravenel, her deceased husband's tormentor from boarding school. It's so strange to meet a man who not only makes her blood heat, but also makes her skin crawl.

Phoebe and West are often thrown together as they await the wedding of Phoebe's brother to West's cousin. She discovers that the more she's around him, the less he seems like the evil bully she had believed him to be. West is very gracious and quite capably in charge of the estate that his brother has recently taken over. Phoebe is constantly in awe of how great West is with her two children. Surely someone who is so patient and kind to these young boys couldn't be as bad as her husband had said.

West knows that he made many mistakes as a young boy. To combat the pain of his childhood, he turned to causing pain to others, including young Lord Clare. When he discovers that Phoebe knows of his treatment of her husband while at boarding school, West doesn't hold her actions against her. In fact, he expects her to blow him off. Instead, she sets out to seduce him.

Overall, this was everything I've come to expect from Lisa Kleypas. It was heart-warming and sexy, full of remorse and yet hopeful. The only this I didn't quite get was how West's treatment of Lord Clare was SUCH a big deal to Phoebe at first but then she just not only gets over it but decides to just jump into bed with him. It seemed a little incongruous to the rest of what was going on. I was completely in love with West and the way he interacted with Phoebe's boys. Their relationship was so natural and just the highlight of the book for me.
