The Natural History of Us - cover

About THE NATURAL HISTORY OF US:

One class assignment. One second chance at love. The school player is all in. Now he needs to win back the sweet commitment girl who's forever owned his heart.

Justin Carter has a secret. He's not the total player Fairfield Academy believes him to be. Not really. In fact, he used to be a one-woman guy...and his feelings for her never went away. Too bad he broke her heart three years ago and made sure to ruin any chance she'd ever forgive him.

Peyton Williams is a liar. She pretends to be whole, counting down the days until graduation and helping her parents at the family ranch. But the truth is, she's done everything she can to get over Justin, and salvation is just around the corner. With graduation one short month away, she'll soon break free from the painful memories and start her life fresh. Of course, she has to get through working with him on one last assignment first.

For Justin, nothing ever felt as right as being with Peyton, and now that fate's given him a shot at redemption, he's determined to make the most of it. And for Peyton...well, Justin Carter has always been her kryptonite.

Justin tipped up my chin with his finger and said, “You’re far from just anyone, Peyton. You’re impulsive and fearless. You’re stubborn and curious. You drive me insane with your millions of questions. And your heart… Sunshine, it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”
I wanted to look away. Hearing compliments was hard for me, I never really believed them. But when it came to Justin? God, I wanted to believe them so badly.
He brushed his thumb across my jaw. “Instead of giving up in the hospital, like most people would’ve done, you walked away optimistic. Grateful, even. I’m in awe of you.” Justin looked deep into my eyes and said, “Peyton, you make me want to be a better guy. I want to deserve those sweet smiles of yours. I—”
I leaned forward and kissed him.
Words wouldn’t express what he did to me. My heart felt heavy, so overflowing with love for this wounded, insecure boy that I couldn’t contain it all. So I put it in my lips. In my mouth and in my tongue and in my small gasp of surprise when Justin yanked my body flush against his.
I gave myself over to emotion, threading my fingers through his thick, dark hair. Deepening the kiss and tangling my tongue with his. Dizzying desire whipped through my body, fogging my head with want, and settling in a warm pool of tingles in my belly. Goose bumps danced across my skin as the cool, crisp taste of mint exploded on my tongue.
“Baby…”
Wow. The word set off a flame in my blood. It was a claiming, every bit as much as his lips as they ravaged my mouth, taking over control, possessing me. And I wanted to be his. Completely, in every way I possibly could.
Justin was wrong before. I wasn’t strong or incredible. I wasn’t anything special. But he made me feel as though I was. If I’d learned anything living post-GBS, it was that life was short, and when you found happiness, you grabbed on with both hands and never let go. I had no intention of loosening my grip.
“Uh…” Justin groaned as he tore his lips from mine. “We can’t.” He pushed my hips back, but kept his hands clenched around my waist and leaned forward to brush another kiss against my swollen mouth. His heavy-lidded gaze fell on his handiwork. “Your dad… your whole family… they’ll see us. We have to…”
That he was so breathless over me was a thrill of its own. I grinned up at him, taunting his inner battle by raking my teeth across my bottom lip, and he swallowed hard before inching closer to the edge of the bench. Closer to me.

Whether it's Adult Contemporary or Young Adult, I am completely in love with Rachel Harris's style.

Because The Natural History of Us is told in the present tense with flashbacks to the past, this story has the unique ability to give us both the intense tingles of first love as well as the longing and desperation of a second chance romance.

Justin Carter and Peyton Williams have a history that no one knows about and while they were happy together for a brief moment, it ended painfully for both of them. They have both moved on, but neither has truly let go.

Peyton has dealt with a lot in her young life and the author's knowledge and use of Peyton's illness was creative and actually perfect for what was needed in this story. Does that make sense? It provided the perfect mystery and drive to push the story forward.

A school project forces Peyton to allow Justin back into her life when she would rather continue hiding behind her walls of pain. Justin is sweet and charming and, despite obstacles, quickly makes himself invaluable to Peyton and her dedication to saving her family's farm.

Peyton is a strong heroine. She isn't a push over and often tells Justin when he's being annoying and a bit of a jerk. Even though she is a little more guarded than she used to be, we get to watch her overcome her fears, both physically and mentally.

Justin has finally decided to go after what he really wants. His determination to make Peyton his is only outweighed by his desire to see her happy. He wants to be the one to bring a smile to her face, but when it comes down to it, he is willing to step aside if he is not the best choice for her.

Watching Justin and Peyton fall in love in the past plays second fiddle to watching them learn to love again in the present. Both stories tug at the heart for different reasons.

This is a cute story with all of my favorite YA tropes thrown into one. Definitely recommended for anyone who reads Young Adult.

Blackmail, family secrets, future plans on the verge of collapsing, two people who aren’t supposed to be together fall in love, and the power of social media in defining who you are when you’re not even sure who that person is yet…Join the Club and and immerse yourself in the world of the Reign of Terror. Pick up WALK THE EDGE today!

    Walk the Edge - cover

One moment of recklessness will change their worlds

Smart. Responsible. That's seventeen-year-old Breanna's role in her large family, and heaven forbid she put a toe out of line. Until one night of shockingly un-Breanna-like behavior puts her into a vicious cyberbully's line of fire—and brings fellow senior Thomas "Razor" Turner into her life.

Razor lives for the Reign of Terror motorcycle club, and good girls like Breanna just don't belong. But when he learns she's being blackmailed over a compromising picture of the two of them—a picture that turns one unexpected and beautiful moment into ugliness—he knows it's time to step outside the rules.

And so they make a pact: he'll help her track down her blackmailer, and in return she'll help him seek answers to the mystery that's haunted him—one that not even his club brothers have been willing to discuss. But the more time they spend together, the more their feelings grow. And suddenly they're both walking the edge of discovering who they really are, what they want, and where they're going from here.

I feel like I am among the 1% of Americans (probably 1% of humans) who does not like Sons of Anarchy. I know this show is responsible for a lot of the motorcycle club books that have come out recently. I have strategically avoided them up until know, but there was just something about Katie McGarry's Young Adult MC books that drew me in. I started with Nowhere But Here and found it to be quite enjoyable. I was immediately invested in the lives of the secondary characters and so was greatly excited to see that this next book was about Razor.

Since the synopsis is right above here, I'll attempt to review while avoiding summarizing. I want to start by saying that Katie writes with an incredible depth of emotion. She captures the intensity of young love, the desperation and passion that accompany the "life-or-death" feelings that are intimately joined with the young. The Thunder Road series carries an extra element of bad boys and real physical danger to lure readers along on this adventure.

Razor and Breanna seem to be extreme opposites at first, but as we see them interact we notice that they are not that different after all. The bring out the best in each other and fill in where the other is lacking.

Breanna sees something in Razor that even his closest friends, his "brothers" cannot. She believes in him and trusts him in ways that his family never has.

Razor is awed by Breanna and her intelligence. Where others see her as some sort of freak, Razor is humbled by her whit and ability. The way these two compliment each other is exactly as love should be.

Throughout the series, there are real threats and dangers that hound our heroes and their friends. Each book is fraught with action and and suspense, a delicious balance to the romance and friendship and overall sense of family. A truly great read.

BLURB:
Casey Coffield has a growing list of personal flaws he keeps locked away in his head:
He’s never on time.
His list of IOUs to his best friend is endless.
Money is always short.
Goals are never in reach.

Oh, and he’s decided to add college drop-out to that list, too. He doesn’t really think that last one’s such a bad thing, but his family insists it is, so it stays on the list.

On paper, he’s a zero. But in person, when he’s mixing tracks for a sea of bodies at the hottest clubs and parties, he’s downright irresistible. Just-right stubble on his chin, body of a boxer and a smirk that stimulates all the right nerves—women have never been a problem. They flock to his swagger and fall for his charm…fast.

All except for this one.

Purple hair, gray eyes, a raspy voice and sass, Murphy Sullivan is a little bit country and a little bit rock-n-roll. And her and Casey? They have history. He can’t remember it, but she wrote a song about him—and it’s not exactly a love song. But it is good. Damn good. And uncovering her inspiration just might be the key to solving a few of his shortcomings—not to mention open doors to his own big break in the music industry.

But sometimes dreams get messy when they collide. Sometimes life changes patterns. A past paints the wrong picture and futures get cloudy. The only question that remains is who will you choose when the dust settles—you? Or the girl of your dreams?

She breathes in slowly, rolling on her back and stretching her arms over her head. The black T-shirt she’s wearing rides up enough that I see her sides and bare stomach above her low-slung jeans, and I think to myself how far I’ve come. Any other girl, some other place and time, and I would be switching gears right now, capitalizing, because I always get the girl. I just don’t always keep the girl. They learn things, grow tired of me, or, more often, I am bored and done before anything has a chance. It’s never been the right girl, really. But Murphy…she’s a keep kind of girl. And this whole thing started because she hates me, so patience is necessary. But I have had my hand on that stomach. I’ve felt how warm her skin is through layers of fabric. I bet her skin is searing bare.

Patience isn’t a virtue. Patience is a murderer of six-foot-one fools desperate to kiss girls who sing like angels and look like my dreams.

Thank God for Hometowns - Blog Tour + Lori's Review of Nobody But You by Jill Shalvis

Title: Nobody But You
Author: Jill Shalvis
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Publication Date: 3/29/2016
Source: ARC from Publisher

When Jacob was injured in the war, it changed him for life. Now all he wants to do is come home to Cedar Ridge, settle in at his lakeside cabin and get some much-needed peace and quiet. But there's no peace to be had when he finds a spitfire of a woman camping out on his property. Half the time he's not sure whether he wants to spank her or kiss--or maybe both. He's in a dark place and a dark mood, and here's this wildly hot woman who is also funny and light and may be the balm be needs to soothe his aching soul.

Sophie Marren is pretty much penniless after leaving her abusive husband. She doesn't have the money to pay rent or the slip fees for docking the boat where she's been sleeping. She was getting along just perfectly until the good-looking, brooding, I'm-too-sexy-for-myself guy moves into the lake cabin that the slip belongs to. Sure he's hot as the noon sun with those dark lens and even darker 'tude, but god forbid she tie herself to another man who's always telling her what to do. But the more she gets to know Jacob, the more she sees how willing he is to battle for her wounded heart...a battle she might just let him win.

Finish this sentence: My hero will always…
Want to protect Sophie, even when she doesn’t want him to.

Do you have a favorite quote/scene from the book?
“We going to argue about this?” he asked.
“Don’t we argue about everything?”
“Good point,” he said.  “Let’s settle this one like adults— in the bedroom, naked.”

**OR**
He was a smart enough guy to get that she was the one for him.  He was also smart enough to know that he was going to have to work his ass off for it.

In the book Jacob’s mom, Carrie, is sick. What was it like writing a character that had dementia?
Having family experience with this, I just wanted to show that not every minute of it is torturous.

Jill Shalvis is my go-to for fun, sexy romance. When I need a pick-me-up, she never lets me down. I was hesitant to start a new series after Lucky Harbor, after all, how could they possibly compare? Well, I'm happy to say that the Cedar Ridge series is definitely holding it's own.

Nobody But You is book number three in the series. I've been excited for Jacob's story since he was first mentioned in book one. The prodigal son returned is a compelling story. I'm happy to say that this broody military man didn't disappoint.

Jacob has been estranged from his family for over ten years. While he kept tabs on his mother all of this time, he made sure to leave no hint of his whereabouts for the family that surely despises him for leaving the way he did. He especially wants to avoid his twin, with whom he had a major falling out before he left, but circumstances and a forced temporary leave have left him with nowhere else to go.

Jacob meets his match in recently dumped Sophie Marren. Sophie is determined not to depend on a man for anything in her life ever again. She is awkward and funny and completely balances Jacob's sullen moods.

The Kincaid clan are a close knit group that definitely have each other's backs, but they aren't afraid to tell each other how things really are. What they are afraid of is disappointing the others, like their father did to them time after time after time. They are all strong characters who spend too much time in their own heads. Shalvis has created a perfect cast of significant others for the Kindcaids who encourage their loved ones as well as kick some butt when it's necessary.

I feel like I either run out of words to use or run the risk of repeating another review of one of Shalvis' books, but really, the same can be said for most of them. Shalvis has an amazing ability to write small town romances. She builds an entire community that you want to live in. She creates characters that you want as your BFF's. You can't go wrong choosing any of her books.

This is a series and is best read in order, but you could pick up any one in the series and enjoy it without having read any others.

Carrie Underwood - Thank God For Hometowns

I am not usually a country music fan, but this song
just fit Jacob's story so perfectly.
