I Want You - A Review of Taste the Heat by Rachel Harris

Add it on Goodreads: Taste the Heat
(Goodreads Blurb)
One sexy fire captain. One Cajun chef, One combustible kitchen…

When chef Colby Robicheaux returned home to New Orleans to save her family restaurant, the last person she expected to reconnect with was her brother’s best friend and her childhood crush. As tempting as a sugar-coated beignet, Jason is one dish she doesn’t want to taste. Colby is counting down the days till she can leave the place where her distrust of love and commitment originated and go back to Vegas.

Fire captain Jason Landry isn’t looking for love, either. He knows he should focus on finding the perfect mother for his daughter, but when he first sees Colby, all grown up and gorgeous, he can’t help but be drawn to her. And when she suggests a no-strings-attached fling, Jason doesn’t want to say no.

As their relationship grows more intense, Colby finds that Jason isn’t as easy to leave behind as she thought. Could turning up the heat on something real be worth the possibility of getting burned?

The Story...

For as long as she can remember, Colby Robicheaux has wanted Jason Landry.  As a young girl, Colby used to chase after her older brother's best friend.  As he got older she watched him date, fall in love, and then marry his high school sweetheart.  Now Colby has returned home to discover that Jason is a widower, raising his pre-teen daughter, Emma, on his own.

There is an instant attraction between Colby and Jason, but both are guarded.  Colby's plans are to remain in Louisiana only for the summer.  Plus, after witnessing one too many men cheat on his loved one, Colby isn't in a hurry to lose her heart to Jason only to have it destroyed all over again.

Jason is drawn to the grown-up Colby, but he has to think about more than himself now.  Already his young daughter seems too attached to this sexy, incredible woman.  What will happen to Emma when yet another woman is taken from her life?

What Works...

The chemistry.  The sexual tension between Jason and Colby is evident from the moment they lay eyes on each other.  Also, their shared history allows their relationship to progress quickly.  Emma is an awesome addition to the story.  She encourages Jason and Colby to be around each other when they might have held back and stayed away.

What Didn't...

There were some characters that were incorporated into the story because they will be used later in the series and they felt a little flat or unnecessary.  I know that as I read the series that they will become more developed and appreciated.  And I will keep reading.  This was sexy and fun.

4 out of 5 stars
