Open Arms - WAITING ON YOU by Kristan Higgins

Does being nobody's fool mean that you're nobody's love?

Colleen O'Rourke is in love with love... just not when it comes to herself. Most nights, she can be found behind the bar at the Manningsport, New York, tavern she owns with her twin brother, doling out romantic advice to the lovelorn, mixing martinis and staying more or less happily single. See, ten years ago, Lucas Campbell, her first love, broke her heart... an experience Colleen doesn't want to have again, thanks. Since then, she's been happy with a fling here and there, some elite-level flirting and playing matchmaker to her friends.

But a family emergency has brought Lucas back to town, handsome as ever and still the only man who's ever been able to crack her defenses. Seems like maybe they've got some unfinished business waiting for them—but to find out, Colleen has to let her guard down, or risk losing a second chance with the only man she's ever loved.

Kristan Higgins

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling
author and two-time winner of the Romance
Writers of America RITA® Award, Kristan lives
with her family in a small Connecticut town that
boasts a wonderful library, a great agricultural
fair, a really good ice-cream stand and not much
else. She is the mother of two lovely kids and
the wife of a brave firefighter who is also
(perhaps more important) a fantastic cook.

Previously a copywriter, Kristan began writing
fiction when her children graced her life with
simultaneous afternoon naps. Writing, she
found, was infinitely more satisfying than folding laundry, and so began her first novel. Kristan
holds a B.A. in English from the College of the Holy Cross, which means she can identify dangling participles, quote many great novels and play a mean game of Scrabble.

Kristan is an award-winning baker, devoted fan of the New York Yankees and an avid reader. She and her crew spend as much time as possible at the family home on Cape Cod, where they shiver in the Atlantic, ride bikes, swat horseflies and don’t catch any fish.

For me, reading a book by Kristan Higgins often feels a lot like dinner and drinks with my best girlfriends.  At first it's comfortable and relaxing.  There is a lot of laughing and catching up, and more often than not an upturned chair or drink.  By the end of the night, you may not remember all that was said and done, but you know you had a great time, and you know you cannot wait until you are able to do it again.  This book  was all of this and so much more.

I don't know if it was because I had gotten to know Colleen through the previous Blue Heron books or if I'm just a sucker for a second chance at love.  Either way, this is absolutely my favorite Kristan Higgins book to date.  There was a sweetness and a desperation for each other in this book that is rarely matched in books I've read.

Years ago Colleen and Lucas had been in love.  Even though school took them to different places, they thought they were prepared to weather the storm of distance and separation.  They were wrong.

Now, years later, Colleen and Lucas face each other under circumstances that are less than ideal.  Though they both fought for years to get over the other, they cannot seem to resist the attraction that has always flared between them.

The obstacles between them seem insurmountable, but when grief and the threat of the loss of a loved one tear at Lucas, Colleen finds a way to put aside years of hurt and anger to provide him with the one thing he has always needed.  Unconditional love.

5 out of 5 Stars

My musical choice is Open Arms by Journey.  With Lucas and Colleen being sweethearts from the past, it seemed appropriate to include a love song from the past and this one is a great one.
