A Review of ALIENATED by Melissa Landers

(Goodreads Blurb)
Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.
Thank you to Disney Hyperion and to Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The Story...

Cara is still in shock after being informed that she is one of three humans to be included in the foreign exchange program with the L'eihrs, aliens who happen to share the same DNA make-up as humans.  But first her family must survive hosting Aelyx, the alien boy who will be visiting Earth for 8 months.  Even with the full scholarship to the college of her choice and the inside information to launch her writing career, Cara still isn't sure if it will be worth the headache.

Cara's first impression of Aelyx is that he is beautiful but empty.  He may be good looking, but his cold, dead eyes seem specifically designed to turn her away.

While most humans are excited to have a visit from the more advanced L'eihrs, paranoia and ignorance cause a few extremists to begin making trouble.  Cara and Aelyx begin to grow closer as the rest of the school literally turns their backs on them.  Cara makes excuses for Aelyx's secret trips into the woods and the way he seems to keep some things hidden from her.  When Cara's best friend and ex-boyfriend get caught up with the extremist group HALO, Cara has to make a decision.  Can she rely on years of friendship or will she trust Aelyx and the new relationship that she has begun with him?

What Worked...

I loved so much about this story.  The action picked up right away, and I read this within the span of 24 hours.  The aliens were wonderful and I love how the author described their world and their tools.

Aelyx and Cara both started out very wary of each other.  They both felt attraction to the other, but they held back until they learned more about each other.  Their friendship was sweet and grew into something real and strong.

The tension created by HALO, the neighbors, and friends kept things interesting.  This book was a lot of fun and I am very excited to read more of Aelyx and Cara's story.

Even though this story is science fiction, it will definitely appeal to fans of Young Adult Romance.  It was an excellent debut.

What Didn't...

I know we don't know the whole story yet, but it just seemed to me that the L'eihrs forgave the humans too easily.  I think Cara may see some resentment from this once she reaches L'eihr.

5 out of 5 stars
