Talk Dirty - A Review of BEFORE JAMAICA LANE by Samantha Young

(Goodreads Blurb)
One simple lesson in seduction between two friends can turn into so much more…

Despite her outgoing demeanor, Olivia is painfully insecure around the opposite sex—usually, she can’t get up the nerve to approach guys she’s interested in. But moving to Edinburgh has given her a new start, and, after she develops a crush on a sexy postgrad, she decides it’s time to push past her fears and go after what she wants.

Nate Sawyer is a gorgeous player who never commits, but to his close friends, he’s as loyal as they come. So when Olivia turns to him with her relationship woes, he offers to instruct her in the art of flirting and to help her become more sexually confident.

The friendly education in seduction soon grows into an intense and hot romance. But then Nate’s past and commitment issues rear their ugly heads, and Olivia is left broken-hearted. When Nate realizes he’s made the biggest mistake of his life, he will have to work harder than he ever has before to entice his best friend into falling back in love with him—or he may lose her forever…
I tried to not be spoiler-ish but it just didn't work out.  I apologize and warn anyone who doesn't wish to read some spoilers to please stop reading now.

The Story...

After losing her mother and her job, Olivia decides to follow her father, Mick, back to his homeland of Scotland.  There she meets Jo, who was once like a daughter Mick and her group of friends.  She is instantly attracted to the gorgeous Nate Sawyer, but stuffs her feelings down when she realizes how good of a friend he can be.

Months of hanging out with Nate and watching him go through women wear on Olivia's nerves.  Or maybe that's just the fact that she has gone seven years without sex and has never had an orgasm that wasn't self-made.

With her friends pairing up and getting engaged and married, Liv decides that it's time to take control of her own future.  She asks Nate to help her learn how to flirt.  And when she realizes that it's not the flirting that scares her, but what comes after the flirting, Liv asks Nate to help her gain some sexual experience.

Nate and Liv begin to share some amazing sexual experiences, all behind their friends' backs.  Nate begins giving Liv mixed signals and comes close to outing them to their friends several times.  But when things begin to become too intense, Nate turns tail and runs to hide behind the pain of his past.

When he finally realizes that he not only lost his lover, but also his best friend, Nate tells Liv that he's sorry and that he loves her.  But it's too late.  Liv's sites are set on someone new.  And what's worse is that she cannot even continue the friendship because its simply too painful.  What does Nate have to do to convince her that she is the love of his life?

What Worked...

The author's wit shines through in each of these books.

Nate is super sexy.  The way he talks to Liv and builds her self esteem is just plain awesome.  His easy going nature combined with his attention to detail just makes me love him even more.  He loved dirty talk and it was fun watching him teach Liv to become comfortable enough to talk to him the way he likes.

I am a sucker for a good friends to lovers story and the author really did well with this one.  It could have been ridiculous with the idea of asking her friend to help her get comfortable having sex, but when you read both of their stories, it all just makes sense.  I was very emotional through this story and stayed awake way too long shedding silent tears on my pillow.

It was great seeing all of the characters from the past books as well and continuing their stories.

What Didn't...

I loved it all.  I'm such a huge fan of this series and hope it continues for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars
